With everyone living busy lives these days, it is very easy to stick to our everyday routines and not consciously take into consideration what is around us and the dangers that could arise.
While electricity provides us with a lot of what we require to go about our day, it is also important to remember that if used incorrectly, it has the potential to cause serious injury or death.

Smoke Alarms/Fire Safety Equipment
Statistics show that the largest majority of house fires occur during our colder months than any other time of the year. This being the case, it is essential to ensure that the smoke alarms and other fire safety equipment throughout your household are working correctly.
1. We advise testing your smoke alarm regularly to ensure that it is working correctly
2. Replace any old batteries with new ones if required.
3. Organize for a smoke alarm technician to carry out an inspection to confirm that everything is in accordance and working how they should be.
4. Any fire extinguishers and fire blankets should be check to make sure they are within their use by date.
Portable Heating/Electrical Blankets
As the seasons start to change and the temperature begins to drop, there is undeniably an increase in people using heating systems and electric blankets. Here are some things to consider if you are planning on using these:
1. Make sure that your heaters have been serviced by an electrician.
2. Before plugging in your heater, check the cords and make sure they are in good condition (Not frayed)
3. Clean the heater to avoid any flammable triggers.
4. Your heater should be 1.5 meters away from furniture or anything that has the potential to cause a fire.
5. Do not place ANY OBJECTS on top of the heater while it is turned on.
6. Always turn your heater off when going to sleep.
7. If you are using an electric blanket, read the instruction manual carefully.
8. Do not use an electric blanket for an infant or small children.
9. Ensure that the bed linen is flat and not bunched in any places.
Fireplaces
These days, a fireplace is often a bit of a novelty and feature within a home, and when burning, creates a nice cozy atmosphere. While it is easy to understand why people that have a fireplace enjoy using them, we recommend being cautious and following our tips below:
1. Organise for your chimney to be cleaned out at least once a year.
2. Ensure your fireplace has been thoroughly cleaned prior to using.
3. Use dry wood for burning.
4. After use, and once returned to a reasonable temperature, sweep away any excess ash around the fireplace.
5. Do NOT use gasoline or any flammable liquids to ignite the fire.
